Imagine a large, grassy lakeside ranch, stretching as far as the eye can see and full of beautiful thoroughbred equines wherever you look. America may come to mind, but Misawa Horse Park, open since 2016, is actually found in northeastern Aomori Prefecture, a stone's throw from the pristine waters of Lake Ogawara. And as you’ll see, there is plenty to enjoy at the facility, even for the non-equestrians among you.
Misawa offers affordable horseback riding and trekking, courtesy of a veteran American horseback-riding instructor with over 25 years of experience. Along with a wide range of lessons and options—covering old hands to those saddling up for the first time—discounts are available for more regular visitors who can choose to become members. If saddling up on stallions and ponies isn't enough, those with more energy to burn can enjoy canoeing and cycling options to round off a terrific triathlon package.
After that, move from four legs to two wheels and enjoy cycling trails with beautiful lakeside views Cyclists must be 150 cm or taller and weigh no more than 80 kg or so. Canoeing on the inviting waters of the lake meanwhile, the 11th-largest in Japan, is a joy. If all this exercise makes you hungry, optional BBQ catering is available (for guests staying at Yasuragiso or the Ogawara Lakeside Cottage) for 4,000 yen per person (plus tax).
